How Professional Duct Cleaning Works
Professional duct cleaning commonly uses a source-removal approach. The duct system is placed under vacuum so air pulls inward, then buildup inside the ducts is loosened so it travels into the collection equipment rather than into the rooms. Loosening and capture happen at the same time.
This is worth understanding when comparing quotes. A quick pass with a vacuum at the register openings is a much smaller job than cleaning the duct runs behind them, and the two are often advertised at similar prices.

How do you keep the debris contained while you work?
What happens if you find something cleaning cannot fix?
Air Duct Cleaning
A duct system has two sides. Supply ducts carry heated and cooled air out to the rooms, running from the main trunk lines into smaller branch ducts that feed each register. Return ducts pull room air back to the system. Returns tend to collect dust, hair and lint faster than the supply side, because they draw air in. A cleaning that covers only the supply side leaves half the system untouched. Over the years these systems accumulate household dust, pet hair, pollen and construction debris from remodelling work.
Dryer Vent Cleaning
A dryer vent is a single exhaust line running from the dryer to the outside of the building. Lint settles along that run and collects fastest at bends, where airflow slows. The lint screen only covers the first few inches. The rest of the line, the wall penetration and the exterior termination all matter, and a vent can be blocked at the outside opening while the interior line is clear. Restricted airflow is what leads to longer drying times and a dryer that runs hotter than it should. Different systems, different jobs.

How to Prepare for Your Appointment
There is not much for you to do.
- Clear a small working space around your floor and wall registers, or around the dryer if that is the service booked.
- Make sure the technician can reach the furnace, air handler or dryer connection.
- Put pets in a room with the door closed.
Move anything fragile away from the immediate work area.
You do not need to move furniture, clean anything in advance, or take vents off yourself.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Duct cleaning equipment can create noise during the work, so if you have calls scheduled, plan to take them from a room away from where the crew is working.
You can ask questions during the service. Your technician can explain what they are finding as they go, and in a system that has not been cleaned in years there is usually something worth seeing.
Your technician can let you know when the service is complete and if there are any findings to discuss.
Cleaning Does Not Fix Everything
Worth knowing before you book.
Cleaning removes buildup from a system that is otherwise intact. It does not repair damaged ducts, a crushed vent connection, a duct that has come apart inside a wall, or unsuitable vent material. Those are repair jobs.
And if a dryer vent is clear, airflow is good, and the dryer still will not dry properly, the cause may be the appliance rather than the exhaust.
